My Experience in Normandy France
I am Michael Shimek from Crawford, Nebraska. In December of my 10th grade year, my teacher Moni Hourt announced that she would be applying for a program associated with the National History Day program. In order to qualify for the program, my classmates and I were required to write an essay depicting what we would do with the knowledge obtained from a visit to Normandy France and the subject of D-Day. She chose my essay based on its content. She announced to the class that I would be accompanying her to Normandy France and would engage in intense studying and activities prior to our trip in the middle of June.
Once the date to attending the Normandy Institute arrived, I did not expect to become so close to people: I made friends with each and every one of the students. Not only did I learn about the World War II conflict and D-Day, I learned about people from a different country and their struggles in the war. A plus to the trip: I finally got to immerse myself in a different culture and language. I am forever greatful to Mr. Albert H. Small and the great staff that put the program together. It has definitely changed my life, as well as given me new appreciation for freedom and those who fight to protect it.
